In my third season of cycling, seeing how far my bike will take me.

Victor Berlemont Trophy and Toachim Grand Prix

Toachim Grand Prix

A strong field assembled on the 1st August for the Toachim Grand Prix, near Canterbury, some reflection of the £1000 prize for the winner.  The early breaks did not stick but after the race began to split up from the first lap up of six of the Molash hill.  Dan Tilley, Onelife Dev Squad, jumped across to a break of 11 riders who soon gained a decent gap on the chasing bunch.  There were a number of failed attempts to jump across to the breakaway from the peloton but failed due to the high pace, the strong headwinds and the climbing involved with the course.  The final climb up White Hill seperated the riders and Dan Tilley climbed outstandingly well to finish 8th and claim a wodge of cash.  Dan as ever was frustrated not to win but this was an outstanding ride given his recent fitness problems.  Drew Holmes rode well to finish in the bunch in one of the highest quality fields for a number of years.  Will Kemp came in with a small bunch just after.  The race was won by Martin Ford.

Victor Berlemont Trophy

The weather was the major factor in the 140km race.  As the riders lined up for the start, the heavens opened and original race plans changed instantly.  With riders fighting to stay out of trouble at the front of the race, the early pace was high.  Dan Tilley ended up on the floor on the second lap unfortunately, especially after excellent results in the Wessex League, in Belgium and in the Toachim Grand Prix.  Dan luckily only suffered aesthetic damage and with his bike in need of some TLC.  No doubt he will win the next one.

Drew Holmes and Will Kemp managed to survive the weather and despite some spirited attempts to jump across, just missed the winning break of 3 riders.  The bunch was then neutralised, due to a crash, but the break was not and so leaving the race to be for 4th place  The rain briefly stopped for 30mins but then the race was battered with heavy hail.  As ever a great deal of credit must go to Trevor Holmes of Holmes Couriers for getting drenched while handing out bottles despite getting up at 4am to do so.  Drew Holmes broke away from the soaked group he was riding with to finish an excellent 15th place with Will Kemp on his wheel taking 16th and hopefully riding into some form.
